Position Summary

The Department of World Languages at UA Little Rock is accepting applications for a nine-month Visiting Assistant Professor of Spanish position beginning in August 2018. Preference will be given to those applicants with an area of specialization in Spanish Applied Linguistics/Second Language Acquisition; however, applicants with a concentration or other areas of specialization in Spanish linguistics will also be considered.


A candidate's application will be enhanced by demonstrating a commitment to proficiency-based teaching in undergraduate courses; interest in teaching Spanish for the Professions; and/or interest in working with a growing population of heritage learners. Candidates will be expected to engage actively in outreach with the Latino community in Little Rock. This position is governed by state and federal laws, and agency/institution policy.

Job Duties and Responsibilities


+ Teach all levels of undergraduate Spanish courses as needed;

+ Demonstrate proficiency-based teaching and commitment to student success initiatives, including mentoring and advising;

+ Must be able to teach online courses;

+ Must be able to use Blackboard and online learning software;

+ Participate in curriculum development and recruitment and retention;

+ Actively serve the department, college, university and community, and perform affiliated duties as assigned;

+ Engage actively with outreach to the Latino community;

+ Actively participate in personal research and professional practice;

+ Perform other duties as needed.



Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities


+ Near-native fluency in Spanish and English;

+ Familiarity with ACTFL's World-Readiness Standards for Learning Languages;

+ Demonstrated strong organizational and communication skills;

+ Ability to effectively communicate in person, in writing, and through electronic media;

+ Ability to work with students from diverse backgrounds.



Required Education and/or Experience

PhD or DML with an area of specialization in Spanish Applied Linguistics/Second Language Acquisition, a concentration in Spanish linguistics, or other areas of specialization in Spanish linguistics by August 2018.


ABD's may be considered if all degree requirements are completed before employment commences in August 2018.



Preferred Education and/or Experience

Evidence of proficiency-based teaching and commitment to student success initiatives, including mentoring and advising.
